|Orange Beach to upgrade osprey camera at recreation center|
February 10, 2014 - Orange Beach, AL (OBA) - Orange Beach IT Director Rauf Bolden issued the following statement Monday regarding upgrades to the osprey camera on a nest at the recreation center:
On Tuesday, Feb. 11, we will be working to upgrade the Osprey Camera with better optics, night vision and sound. The timeline is to go live on Wednesday, Feb. 12, at the URL below and wait for our couple to show up, lay eggs and raise their family.
Last year we answered what seemed like thousands of E-Mails about the Ospreys, their habitat and migration patterns. One night I met a family who had come to Orange Beach on a vacation-style pilgrimage after viewing the camera online. The children were so excited to actually see the nest and touch the pole the platform is on. It was like they were bonding with the spirit of the birds by holding onto the wood. Our feed was shared with grandparents and grandchildren across America and around the world. In 2013 we had: 34,745 visitors. I expect this number to increase substantially in 2014. Who knows how much benefit Orange Beach will receive, if it goes viral?
I want to thank every employee and Council Member who made sharing this wonder of the natural world possible. Special Thanks goes to Phillip West who secured original funding from The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation through The Nature Conservancy and The Alabama Coastal Foundation. Thanks also to Baldwin EMC for the Osprey Platform and Harbor Communications for the loan of their 55 ft. Bucket Truck to install the new camera. Please contact us using the form on the site, if you have any questions or comments. The site for the camera is ospreycamer.com.
