(GULF SHORES, Ala.) – The beaches are faring pretty well after facing years of down business and tourists. Tourism numbers are up and crews are prepping for the big Hangout Music Festival. The Hangout isn't for another couple of weekends, but organizers are going all out this year.

You'll see the same crowd spread over a larger area, but it's not just the Hangout Festival bringing in the crowds, what used to take three to four days now gets an early start. Wednesday Hangout Festival preps were well underway.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WALA) – They’re still up for review, but all indications are Governor Robert Bentley will sign into law three new Senate Bills into law.

The proposed laws would give insurance companies both tax credit and flexibility, but also provide accountability to companies writing homeowners insurance policies in Alabama.

South Baldwin County economy on rise | al.com

FOLEY, Alabama — The south Baldwin County economy continues to bounce back from the oil spill and other setbacks of the last several years, Foley Mayor John Koniar told members of the South Baldwin Chamber of Commerce.

In the annual State of the City address Tuesday, Koniar said Foley’s city income picked up in the last fiscal year, even though property taxes dropped $107,000 due to lower assessments.

When the folks from the Gulf Shores and Orange Beach Tourism invited Jim DaRosa and me to do a remote broadcast of the Fishing and Outdoor Radio Show from Orange Beach Alabama, how could we resist?

DaRosa and I headed south earlier this week for the sun, white sand beaches and some fantastic fishing. Right now the Gulf of Mexico and the intercostals are giving up some nice fish. We did well and even had one bonus fish that really put the icing on the cake.

Youth organization's donations stolen | Fox10tv.com

ORANGE BEACH, Ala. (WALA) – One of the board of directors for Gulf Coast Youth Reach, Billy Berrey, said nearly $3,000 of items donated to the program to help troubled youth were stolen from a storage unit in Orange Beach.

The donations consisted of autographed footballs, jerseys, nice fishing equipment and even a grandfather clock.

Dolphins are washing up dead while fish disappear as oil and dispersants from BP’s 2010 spill lurk in Gulf waters and marshes. Last month, Riki Ott, marine toxicologist and former Alaska fisherwoman, said “the Gulf looks a lot like Prince William Sound,” the site of the Exxon Valdez spill in 1989. “Our collapse came four years in. I don’t like what I’m seeing with Gulf shrimp, crabs and dolphins.” She spoke at an April 20, town hall meeting on the spill at First Unitarian Universalist Church in New Orleans.

Softball regional set for Gulf Shores Sportsplex - GulfCoastNewsToday.com: Sports

GULF SHORES, Alabama — The pairings for Friday and Saturday’s AHSAA softball regional at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex have been set, and four teams from Baldwin County are vying for a spot in next week’s softball state tournament in Montgomery.
In Class 6A, Fairhope and Daphne advance to the regional and in 5A Spanish Fort and Gulf Shores advanced. All four teams will play in the regional tournament on Friday.

GULF SHORES, Ala. – City officials had the right information to make the right decisions on a flood prone neighborhood back in the 1990s.

But the officials who most needed to know it weren’t privy to it, an attorney representing citizens in a recent lawsuit said. The city recently agreed in January to buy 27 of the homes in the stricken area, but had to go to court over who was due how much.

FOLEY, Ala. — A Foley man is currently in jail for allegedly raping an elderly woman.

According to Foley Police Chief David White, authorities were summoned to a West Myrtle Avenue residence at approximately 12:15 a.m.  Thursday by an elderly woman who reported that “a lone offender forcefully entered her residence through the back door and dragged her into a bedroom and beat, choked and raped her.”

Funding from BP could be the best source for funding the proposed renourishment of the eroded coastline at Navarre Beach.

But other potential new sources of income to fund the project could include establishing tolls to cross the Navarre Beach Causeway and charging fees to park in public parking lots, Santa Rosa County Administrator Hunter Walker told commissioners Monday.

EMA Director names candidate for deputy director's slot | al.com

FAIRHOPE, Alabama — Baldwin County EMA Director Mitchell Sims named Reggie Chitwood as his choice to fill the open deputy director’s slot for the agency at today’s county commission work session.

Sims said a committee considered 40 applicants for the job and narrowed the list to 8 called for interviews. Chitwood scored highest in the process, Sims said.

LOXLEY, Alabama — The Loxley burglary investigation police say involved Scott Byrd and Dylan Tyree is expanding.

Investigators have tied the two teens- who were with Summer Moody the night she was shot on Gravine Island- to break-ins at a school, a post office drop box, a business and several residences.
