ORANGE BEACH, Alabama — The first day of the Flora-Bama’s new music festival “Shindig on the Sand” started out as a scorcher, but as the afternoon heat faded into evening and headliner Taylor Hicks took the beach stage, it was just the kind of setting organizers had in mind when they created this festival.

An Alabama Gulf coast development on state park land announced in May has met some unexpected resistance.
As a result of the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill in April 2010, which hit at the height of spring migration and just before the summer beach season, states on the Gulf of Mexico lost a fortune in environmental resources and tourist dollars. BP eventually agreed to repay around $1 billion to the affected states. Now states have to decide the best way to put the money to work.

My walk covered the Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge. It started at the intersection of Fort Morgan road and Cortez street and extended eastward to just past the end of the Beach Highway. I have my backpack full of bottled water so none of us get dehydrated and not just a backpack but also a pedometer on my phone so we can find out how far we’re walking as we walk along the beach here. There’s not much to see near the Fort Morgan road condos and resorts.

A recent decision by the Alabama state legislature to allocate funds from an early settlement with British Petroleum (BP) to build a convention center has aroused anger from Gulf Coast environmental groups.
