In 1949, when Margaret was 2 years old, she moved to Cotton Bayou (Orange Beach) with her parents.  In 1964, while in high school, Margaret wrote an 8 page report titled: A Brief History of Orange Beach.  Until now, this was the only known history of Orange Beach.  Margaret continued gathering history and old photographs of the area that resulted in the only history book about Orange Beach, Alabama.  Margaret Childress Long and her husband Buddy Long currently live in the home on Cotton Bayou where Margaret was raised.

Co-author Michael D. Shipler is a noted historian living in Bay Minette, Alabama.  Michael and his wife Pam have been residents of Baldwin County for over 30 years.  They are also the owners and managers of Leedon Art in Bay Minette.

About the Book
The Best Place to be- The Story of Orange Beach, AL

The Best Place to Be
The Story of Orange Beach, Alabama

is about the geography, the climate, the history, and most importantly, the people who have made Orange Beach the best place to be.

The area that is now known as Orange Beach, Alabama, has had visitors for at least the last 11,500 years- not surprising when you consider that it is located on the Gulf of Mexico, has access to the interior bays and bayous lying just north of Perdido Pass, a semitropical climate and miles of sugar white sand beaches.

The Story of Orange Beach Alabama gives the reader an overview of the history of the Orange Beach area during the last 100 years or so, during which Orange Beach transformed from a coastal wilderness into a fast growing modern resort, and focuses on the importance of the charter fishing industry to that development.

In addition to the photographs and material about the people and events that shaped Orange Beach, there is a large appendix of historical documents and information, indexed for quick reference.
