On Alabama's Gulf Coast, the market has been especially dire. Huge blocks of condos have been auctioned off to the lowest bidders and some estimates indicate there are years' worth of home inventory still on the market.

Last year, vacation home sales across the U.S. dropped to 512,000, down 31 percent from 2007, according to a National Association of Realtors survey. Sales of investment homes fell 17.2 percent, to 1.1 million."

First novel H1N1 influenza cases confirmed in Baldwin, Colbert and Dale counties

The Alabama Department of Public Health has confirmed its first novel H1N1 influenza cases in Baldwin, Colbert and Dale counties. As of May 29, there are 85 confirmed and 9 probable cases of novel H1N1 influenza in the state. No deaths have been associated with the virus in Alabama.

Counties and numbers of confirmed novel H1N1 cases which have been reported in their
residents are as follows: Madison, 35; Montgomery, 8; Etowah, 7; Coffee, 6; Jefferson, 5; Shelby, 4; Lee, 4; Limestone, 2; Mobile, 2; Pike, 2; Baldwin, 2; Blount, 1; Colbert, 1; Dale, 1; and county to be determined, 5. The onset of the patients’ symptoms occurred between April 20 and May 25.

The ages of those affected range from 7 weeks to 45 years. Fifty-four of the state’s 85 confirmed cases are in children under 13 years of age. The median age of cases has increased to 10.5 years. Thanks to new laboratory equipment and a decline in the number of novel H1N1 influenza samples submitted, a backlog has been cleared.

The symptoms of novel H1N1 influenza are similar to the symptoms of traditional influenza and include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. Some people have reported diarrhea and vomiting associated with novel H1N1 influenza. Close associates are advised to limit their contact with others for a period of seven days from the time they were exposed.

The incubation period from the moment of exposure to novel H1N1 influenza until symptoms develop is two to seven days. Individuals are infectious to others one day before until seven days after symptoms develop. Persons who develop symptoms of respiratory illness should contact their medical provider.

Press Release: "The Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources’ Marine Resources Division in Gulf Shores has responded to several reports of dead fish on the Eastern Shore of Mobile Bay, especially in the Point Clear area. Recently, callers have reported finding large red drum dead on the shoreline, although the fish specimens exhibit no apparent lesions or markings. Smaller red drum and other species of fish – mullet, flounder, catfish and smaller species – have been reported with lesions.

Water samples have been taken from the area and will be processed by the Alabama Department of Public Health. Several fish collected during this incident have been collected and sent to Auburn University for testing."

It’s a conference Gupta tries to attend every year.

Women's Soccer Releases 2009 Schedule - KENTUCKY OFFICIAL ATHLETIC SITE: "The Kentucky women's soccer team has announced its 2009 schedule, which includes five conference home dates and 11 total matches at the UK Soccer Complex.

UK will face nine schools that played in the 2008 NCAA Tournament, as well.

The Wildcats will kick off the Jon Lipsitz Era with four straight home games including the season opener on Friday, Aug. 21 against Cincinnati, followed by another home date against in-state rival Louisville on Saturday, Aug. 29.

UK will also host ACC power Wake Forest on Sept. 4. The Demon Deacons finished the 2008 season ranked 24th in several polls. In addition, UK is making a trip to Austin, Texas to take on the powerhouse Texas Longhorns on Sept. 13.

The Wildcats will also host the Akron Zips as well as the UK Tournament which includes matches against Western Kentucky and Tennessee Tech.

In conference play, Kentucky is set to host Georgia, Tennessee, LSU, Arkansas and Ole Miss.

The 2009 Adult Summer Reading Program is open to adults ages 18 and older, and offers programs, prizes and hands-on creative opportunities. The adult program will run concurrently with the children's and young adult's programs titled "Be Creative @ Your Library" and "Express Yourself" respectively.

Our adult program kicks off Thursday evening, June 4, 2009 at 6:00 p.m. with Gyotaku. We will learn the basics of the art and technique of Japanese fish printing. Thursday, July 9, 2009 at 6:00 p.m. we will learn a few simple bookbinding techniques that just may get you started making your own holiday gifts this year. Kathleen Tucker will be teaching dance at Orange Beach Art Center’s Summer Arts Camp. Mrs. Tucker is the Director and Ballet Instructor at the Gulf Coast Ballet and will bring her wonderful experience to the camp students who choose dance from the many classes offered during the Arts Camp. Her dance class will give children the opportunity to explore dance and begin to appreciate the discipline, confidence, and fun involved in the art of dance.

The goal of this camp is to nurture the creative gifts all children possess. The Summer Arts Camp is June 22 – 26 with many classes available for children. Each class is taught by either a professional artist or educator.
Art Campers will begin at 9:00 AM each morning and rotate their individualized schedule. Camp is over at 3:15 each day. Each day’s instruction will build on the day before as children learn and complete their projects.

The cost of the 2009 Summer Arts Camp is $110. Camp enrollment is very limited. For information on enrolling call the Orange Beach Art Center at 981-2787. Winners of 2009 Island Poetry Contest Announced

The 4th annual Island Poetry Contest ended successfully with 162 participants. The contest was sponsored by the Gulf Shores (Thomas B. Norton) and Orange Beach Public Libraries and their Friends organizations. The contest was open to all students in kindergarten through 12th grades that are patrons of the Island libraries. Certificates and prizes were awarded to the authors of the winning entries. Orange Beach Public Library Children’s Librarian Patsy Rose visited local schools to hand out awards and prizes and meet some of the young poets. Poems were accepted in any poetic form and were judged based on theme development, creative use of language, and appeal to the senses. The prizes were awarded at each grade in the amount of $50 for first prize, $35 for second prize and $25 for third prize.

Open to everyone over the age of 12, the U.S. Coast Guard Approved Boating Safely Course meets all qualifications for the Alabama Boat Operator’s License.

Emerging Artists to exhibit at Orange Beach Art Center

A highly anticipated exhibit of the areas graduating art students, chosen by their professors and/or deans, opens June 11 at Orange Beach Art Center. The graduates’ exhibit will include a diverse range of styles and mediums. Among the students exhibiting as Emerging Artists are University of West Florida’s Molly Bowen (abstract painting) and Daniel Gonzalez (mixed media, video); Springhill College's Matt Carpenter (ceramics); University of South Alabama's Skye Murrill (painting) and April Hopkins (figurative ceramics); University of Mobile's Laura Phillips (drawing, painting).

The Friends of the Arts, Inc. and Orange Beach Art Center began the Visiting Artists and Special Exhibits Series in 2009. One of the objectives is to attract diverse artists from the Southeast to exhibit their works. An important component of this mission is to encourage serious student artists who have chosen to pursue a formal education in visual arts at the university level. To accomplish this goal Friends of the Arts, Inc. and Orange Beach Art Center created the Emerging Artists Exhibit to draw attention to the works of chosen graduating artists. The hope is that this annual exhibition will enhance the careers of young artists by providing exposure, experience and encouragement.

It is, of course, complicated. Most oysters begin life as males, but develop into fe males as they age. You can't tell from looking at the oyster's shell whether it's male or female at any given time, but regardless of the oyster's sex this is the time of year when the oyster is 'ripening up,' meaning the gonads are filling with maturing sperm or eggs.
