Annie Girl Fishing Report

We brought The Annie Girl home from Louisiana about three weeks ago. We had a very productive season there this fall. The Lump was dead but Green Canyon was HOT! Every trip to Green Canyon was a hit with bounty of Yellow fin Tuna.

We have been working on the Annie Girl the past couple of weeks doing our annual haul out and Coast Guard inspections. We are done with that and ready to fish!

Two weeks ago we had a successful overnight trip. Scamp, Red Grouper and Amberjacks top the list of reef fish we encountered on our way offshore.
Late that afternoon we caught several Black fin Tuna, 4 Yellow fins, and a nice Blue Marlin we estimated @ 350 to 400 pounds!

Cobia have started their annual migration through or area and its time to go Cobia Hunting. The next 3 weeks or so should be the best.

It’s time to give me a call to schedule your next fishing trip and I look forward to seeing you.

For more info please call 251-981-2081 or visit: www.captainmikesfishing.com.

Canal plans lead to worries - al.com

Canal plans lead to worries - al.com: "GULF SHORES — When the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers recently proposed granting 10 landowners permits to build 3,093 boat slips along the Intracoastal Waterway, questions quickly arose about whether doing so would preclude nearby property owners from ever having any dock space of their own.

Determining how much boat traffic the 10-mile-long, 125-foot-wide shipping channel can safely handle is the main objective of an environmental impact study that federal regulators have worked on for about three years at the request of the developers, who funded the $1.4 million endeavor. As such, the corps and its consultants have, in a draft of the study released this month, decided that 3,093 new slips would put as much recreational boat traffic on the canal as it could handle."

The fishing forecast is great this month...even for April fools | www.splashpensacolabeach.com | Splash Pensacola Beach: "Hello folks and welcome to paradise! There is a lot happening in the world of fishing in April. In fact, a lot of people would tell you that it is the most exciting saltwater fishing month of the year!!

Cobia or Ling are caught seasonably off the coast of Northwest Florida and start showing up in March and peaking in April and May. In fact, the first cobias have already been caught at the Pensacola Beach Gulf Pier. These large fish migrate north from South Florida in the early spring. For the fisherman on the pier, they generally monitor piers like Panama City, Okaloosa Piers and in earlier days the Navarre pier to gauge when they will be arriving here off Pensacola. Since the hurricanes, the early warning network has been somewhat disabled, meaning catching the first cobia comes at a surprise."

Orcas start Gulf buzz, but they've called it home for years | Houston & Texas News | Chron.com - Houston Chronicle: "The Gulf of Mexico, as even amateur anglers know, is rich in marine life, a saltwater treasure chest of red snapper, speckled trout and shrimp.

And now it’s home to killer whales, the photogenic black-and-white mammals typically thought to live in cold water and eat seals. Really. It’s no fish story.

Scientists say orcas have been in the Gulf for years but are rarely seen because they live far from shore and beyond the typical range of commercial fishermen.

Still, a recent sighting of killer whales 95 miles off the Alabama coast has captivated those who work and play in the warm waters of the Gulf."

Hundreds of killer whales seen in Gulf of Mexico - USA Today

Pensacolanewsjournal - Hundreds of killer whales seen in Gulf of Mexico: "It was a fish story that even veteran boat captains found fascinating: As many as 200 killer whales feeding on tuna in the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico.

'It was like being at Sea World because they'd come right up to the boat,' said Eddie Hall, captain of the Shady Lady, the 60-foot charter boat that spotted the shiny black sea beasts with white eye patches and undersides. 'It was pretty neat.'

It was also hard for some skeptics to believe: Orcas, as killer whales are also known, typically are thought to live in cold water and eat seals.

But Hall's description of what he saw last Oct. 31 was no tall tale: A government biologist who saw video taken from Hall's boat confirmed the captain had spotted the creatures. And last week that same scientist, Keith Mullin, explained at a public meeting in Orange Beach, Ala., that yes, contrary to common perceptions, killer whales really do live in the Gulf, far from land."

Technology News: Tech Buzz: Why It's OK for Newspapers to Die

Technology News: Tech Buzz: Why It's OK for Newspapers to Die: "The transition that's taking place in the news publishing industry -- from print to online -- is a healthy step in technology-driven evolution, though there will undoubtedly be some short-term pain. The loss of print newspapers is akin to the loss of the horse and buggy. The Internet offers the potential for broader and deeper news reporting."

"Creative destruction," a term coined by Joseph Schumpeter in his 1942 book Capitalism, Socialism and Democracy, means exactly what it says -- the process by which a new technology or structure replaces the old and builds a new infrastructure. This is how progress happens and capitalism moves ahead. For a clear example, think back a century or so, when Henry Ford released his first prototype automobile, relegating the horse and buggy, and the buggy whip industry, to obsolescence.

Most would agree that such creative destruction resulted in a good outcome for society. Yet, not everyone is willing to let such revolutions take place without a fight. Indeed, some politicians have proposed bailing out newspapers, as the federal government has done for failing automakers.

Fireworks show could face fizzle - al.com

Fireworks show could face fizzle - al.com: "GULF SHORES — Typically around this time of year, the City Council makes an unheralded and little-debated decision to fund a Fourth of July fireworks show off the public beach. But this year the decision to pay $45,000 for one of the tourism season's key attractions is getting a second thought.

That's not to say that Gulf Shores is likely not to have a July 4 fireworks show — City Council members indicated during a work session Monday that they'd pinch pennies elsewhere if need be. But the hesitation shown by council members, who opted to postpone a decision on funding the display until next month, underscores how the budget crunch has elected officials considering spending that was once considered automatic, even mundane."

Breaking new ground: Alabama's captive plan aims to lower homeowners premiums

Captive insurance companies traditionally insure commercial lines, but Alabama is on track to creating a new use--a captive that provides homeowners insurance to residents of its hurricane-exposed coastal municipalities.

"It's an interesting concept," said Denhis Harwick, president of the Minneapolis-based Captive Insurance Companies Association. "The nature of the beast is commercial lines rather than personal lines. I suspect that's something that regulators would be leery of. Their comfort level with captives involves the fact that they have sophisticated consumers who are essentially self-insuring, and that obviates a lot of the consumer-protection role that a regulator has."

Protecting Alabama's water | AnnistonStar.com

Protecting Alabama's water | AnnistonStar.com: "Observers of the ludicrous were treated last year to a tussle. Some folks wanted a public boat ramp built in Orange Beach to relieve the overcrowding at existing facilities. Other residents of a nearby gated island community did not want the public whizzing around and disturbing their upscale tranquility.

The whole thing descended into an argument over beach mice, feral cats and the right of common folks to go boating.

As far as we know, the matter remains unresolved.

What happened there could happen at many places around the state, as access to rivers, lakes, bays and inlets becomes increasingly threatened by development and the popularity of 'dockominiums' — docks restricted to condominium or neighborhood owners.

Also threatened by the growing expansion of waterfront communities are the mom-and-pop bait shops, ice houses and small marinas that have long served the public. Pushed out as property values soar, unable to fit into the yacht-club atmosphere that comes with the new developments, these iconic establishments are disappearing."
