September 21, 2009 - Orange Beach, AL (OBA) - On Wednesday, September 16, 2009, two Orange Beach residents were aboard the second trip for Honor Flight—South Alabama. Ed Borman and Ezell McLain were among the 92 veterans and 40 volunteer guardians that flew to Washington, DC before dawn and returned to Mobile Regional Airport after 7pm that evening. The day’s events included visiting the World War II Memorial, where they were met by US Senator Jeff Sessions and US Representative Jo Bonner, as well as former US Senators Bob and Elizabeth Dole The men and women also visited the other Memorials on the National Mall and the Arlington National Cemetery. Mr. Borman
and Mr. McLain were welcomed home with flags waves and cheering and
clapping by members of their families and their Community.
We are grateful of the opportunity to honor these veterans who gave so
much and asked for so little in return.

Honor Flight—South Alabama held its inaugural flight in May 2009 and hopes to have at least three more trips. The volunteers that assist the veterans pay their own way but the no veteran is allowed to pay, regardless of ability.
From the South Alabama Honor Flight Website:
Honor Flight South Alabama (HFSA) is a non-profit program established to recognize and honor the tremendous service and sacrifices of America’s “Greatest Generation”, our World War II (WWII) Veterans. HFSA flys these American heroes to Washington, DC, to visit and reflect at their memorial. The WW II Memorial was not dedicated until April 2004, nearly 60 years after the end of the war; therefore, there are
many Veterans who have not had the opportunity or the resources to see their country’s tribute to their bravery.
