May 31, 2009 - Gulf Shores / Orange Beach, AL (OBA) - What a great way to spend a Saturday morning – browsing the Gulf Coast Green Market beside Shelby Lake with the warm morning sun and a balmy breeze creating a perfect start to the day. Fresh fruits
& vegetables, flowers, shrimp, yard art and just about anything from local merchants are on sale. The idea is to support our local economy while enjoying the benefits of fresh produce – Buy Fresh, Buy Local. This is the second year for the Gulf Coast Green Market, which is
sponsored by Bay Title Insurance and supported
by the cities of Gulf Shores & Orange Beach as well as the Alabama Gulf
State Park.
This past Saturday, Silver King corn, sweet peppers, red skinned potatoes, squash,
cucumbers, tomatoes and shrimp were available. Unfortunately, we arrived too late for the home-grown tomatoes – they were sold out within the first hour we were told. Won’t make that mistake again. We saw some beautiful hanging flower baskets and all kinds of plants for the garden and home – Bougainvillea, Confederate Roses, lantana and fresh herbs to name a few.
Besides the fresh vegetables, locally made wines were available from Perdido
Vineyards.
The Green Market is every Saturday in June from 7:00 to 11:00am. Get there early if you don’t want to miss anything.
And here’s the best part – a tomato sandwich for Saturday lunch. White bread slathered with mayo, pilled high with thinly sliced tomatoes and a little salt and pepper - the ultimate summertime treat.
