March 25, 2009 - Orange Beach, AL - The City of Orange Beach's
presentation, Whale Tales from the Gulf of Mexico, has once again put the recent sighting of 200+ Killer Whales
in the Gulf in the
national spotlight. On October 31, 2008 Capt. Eddie Hall of the Shady Lady charterboat was
about 90 miles south of Orange Beach when the crew spotted four large pods
of Killer Whales (Orcas). The Orange Beach Community Website
published the original article written by Steve Layton with Gary Finch
Outdoors on December 3, 2008. A few days later the local
media picked up on the story which garnered national media attention.
On Wednesday March 18, Phillip West with the City of Orange Beach Coastal Resources
Division sponsored a lecture titled Whale Tales from the Gulf of Mexico
at Geno's Fresh Catch Grill located at Zeke's Landing Marina. Dr.
Keith Mullin, Marine Mammal Program Manager for the Southeast Fisheries Science Center,
gave a one-hour talk to a sold out crowd about the numerous whales that make their home in
the Gulf of Mexico. The OBA Website and Alabama Gulf Coast Video taped the event and
published the Whale Tale's video online. Jay Reeves, an AP writer,
picked up on the new information about the Killer Whales and wrote the
article Hundreds of Killer Whales Seen in Gulf of
Mexico. This article was published March 25, 2009. As a result of the AP article, media from all over the country picked up
the new Whale Tales bringing the national spotlight back to Orange
Beach. So far over 400 media outlets had
picked up the AP story.
