Orange Beach Cobia Fishing to be Featured on ESPN2

February 7, 2008 - Orange Beach, AL - Reaching approximately 97 million households, ESPN2 viewers will discover the abundant gulf waters on the Alabama Gulf Coast as George Poveromo searches for and captures cobia. In April 2008, this world-renowned fishing expert and his production crew boarded Captain Ben Fairey’s 62-foot sport fishing boat, the Necessity.

The results of that 3-day long fishing trip just off the Alabama Gulf Coast will be seen during his show George Poveromo’s World of Saltwater Fishing.

The cobia episode is slated to appear on Saturday, February 14, 2009 at 9:30 a.m. (CST). An encore performance will be aired on Sunday, February 15, 2009 at 4:00 a.m. (CST). Check local listings to verify show times.

“We had a great time fishing for cobia with George and his crew,” said airey. “Since knowledge of the local waters is key, we had an advantage of catching the cobia in the middle of their annual spring migration, which resulted in a great fishing experience.”

Also, Poveromo penned an article about cobia fishing on the Alabama Gulf Coast for the December 2008 issue of Salt Water Sportsman, where he is a senior editor. Published since 1939, Salt Water Sportsman is recognized as the industry’s oldest and most popular publication. The magazine has a paid monthly circulation of over 150,000 people while more than 1.8 million individuals read the journal each month.

“The amount of national exposure generated from both the television show and the magazine article is tremendous,” said Herb Malone, president/CEO of the Alabama Gulf Coast Convention and Visitors Bureau. “We are confident that many new anglers will discover our destination and will take advantage of the abundant waters filled with a large variety of fish.”
OBA Editor's Note:  Cobia start showing up along the shoreline in Alabama waters in late March or early April and they stick around through May.  Cobia (aka ling, lemon fish, black kingfish, black salmon, cabio & crabeaters) are one of the best fighting fish in the Gulf of Mexico. While cobia grow to be as large as 78 inches and 150 lbs, they are commonly caught weighing between 30 and 80 lbs.
