Tim Cook from Robertsdale, AL is Apple Computer's New
(Acting) CEO
January 15, 2009-Robertsdale, AL- On January 14th, Apple
Computer co-founder and
CEO Steve Jobs took a temporary medical leave of absence. In
an email to Apple employees, Jobs says that his health problems are
"more complex than he originally believed". Jobs has suffered
from pancreatic cancer, which was diagnosed four years ago.
Jobs' illness created a big buzz in the technology world when he
announced he would not be attending this year's Macworld Conference,
the annual convention for Apple Mac users, January 5th - 9th, 2009.
Jobs usually gives the keynote speech at this event.

Tim Cook, a
Robertsdale, AL native, was hired by Jobs in 1988 to overhaul
Apple Computer's manufacturing and distribution networks which were in
a
shambles.
Cook graduated from Robertsdale High
School in 1978. (Cook's parents still reside in Robertsdale.) He went on to earn his bachelor's degree in industrial engineering at Auburn University.
Prior to his tenure with Apple, was an operations
executive at Compaq Computer and IBM.
According to The Mercury
News, Cook is "widely credited with streamlining Apple's production systems, cutting bloated inventories and replacing Apple factories with contract manufacturers, while ensuring that supplies and products are delivered efficiently around the world".
This is not the first time Cook has been in the top position at
Apple Computers. In 2004, Cook took Jobs' position as CEO when Jobs
took some time off to recover from cancer surgery.
Industry
insiders say that Cook is a top contender to take the CEO roll
permanently if Jobs doesn't return to the post.
