Tim Cook from Robertsdale, AL is
Apple Computer's New (Acting) CEO

January 15, 2009-Robertsdale, AL- On January 14th, Apple Computer co-founder and CEO Steve Jobs took a temporary medical leave of absence.  In an email to Apple employees, Jobs says that his health problems are "more complex than he originally believed".  Jobs has suffered from pancreatic cancer, which was diagnosed four years ago.

Jobs' illness created a big buzz in the technology world when he announced he would not be attending this year's Macworld Conference, the annual convention for Apple Mac users, January 5th - 9th, 2009. Jobs usually gives the keynote speech at this event.

Robertsdale, AL native Tim Cook is Apple Computer's new acting CEO
Tim Cook, a Robertsdale, AL native, was hired by Jobs in 1988 to overhaul Apple Computer's manufacturing and distribution networks which were in a shambles.

Cook graduated from Robertsdale High School in 1978. (Cook's parents still reside in Robertsdale.) He went on to earn his bachelor's degree in industrial engineering at Auburn University. Prior to his tenure with Apple, was an operations executive at Compaq Computer and IBM.

According to The Mercury News, Cook is "widely credited with streamlining Apple's production systems, cutting bloated inventories and replacing Apple factories with contract manufacturers, while ensuring that supplies and products are delivered efficiently around the world".

This is not the first time Cook has been in the top position at Apple Computers.  In 2004, Cook took Jobs' position as CEO when Jobs took some time off to recover from cancer surgery.

Industry insiders say that Cook is a top contender to take the CEO roll permanently if Jobs doesn't return to the post.

The past year has shown that you can never be too cynical about Wall Street, Detroit or Washington D.C. Now with the crazy confusion over Steve Jobs's health, you can add Silicon Valley to that list. It's amazing. Our leaders have done a remarkably thorough job of squandering the public trust. In some cases, be it Bernie Madoff or Rod Blagojevich, the trust has been lost because of dishonest behavior. But most of the time, we have lost trust because our leaders have been unwilling or unable to change. Stuck in the status quo, they have failed to ...
