Choice of Northrop
Grumman/EADS to build Air Force Refueling Tanker a catalyst for
economic growth on Alabama Gulf Coast
|
|
The Pentagon's decision on February 29th to
award a $40 billion tanker contract to Northrop Grumman/EADS
will boost the economy in Mobile, where the plane would be
built, and is expected to have a strong ripple effect all along the
Alabama Gulf Coast. The Boeing Company also bid for the
contract and and they have announced that they will protest the Pentagon's decision.
This protest is not expected to succeed, but will likely delay the start by
about 100 days. |
 |
 |
When (and if) the contract with Northrop Grumman / EADS is finalized, many
high-paying jobs
will be created in Mobile and the surrounding areas during the next
few years. The new manufacturing facility would also bring thousands
of new visitors to Orange Beach, bolstering the local economy and
job market. A contingent of executives employed by EADS from
France, Germany, Span and Britain would move to the Mobile area
upon the contract's finalization, further transforming the area.
