Earth Day Cleanup at Perdido Pass

Overview of the Perdido Pass Seawall & Bridge

April 22, 2007 - Mention an Earth Day Clean-up to scuba divers along the Alabama Gulf Coast and they think about the debris that most people never see.  Debris found under the surface of our beautiful Gulf waters harms marine life.  The Earth Day 2007 Perdido Pass Clean-up removed a lot of dangerous debris, and was supported by numerous divers and land-lovers who pulled this debris from the waterway along the seawall.

Perdido Pass Fisherman
Perdido Pass is a popular spot for anglers.  While it is a great place to cast a line, a net, and a crab-trap, it is easy to get hung up on the rocks along this seawall, causing the anglers to lose their casts.  These lost nets, crab traps, and fishing line entangles fish and other marine life.

Earth Day 2007 is the start of a continuing effort, organized by Gary Emerson of Gary's Gulf Divers, to clean-up the debris that collects along Perdido Pass and endangers our marine life.  Gary is already making plans to organize another clean-up day, and will continue these clean-up efforts on a regular basis.

Volunteers are rewarded in many ways...  Besides the satisfaction they feel from cleaning up the environment, it is a learning experience to see the variety of tiny marine creatures that come out of our waters along with the debris.  If you would like to volunteer to help with these clean-up efforts, call Gary at 251.968.4279.
