Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail
Dedicated on March 9, 2007
March 9, 2007- Orange Beach, AL- Today, the legendary "Catman
Trail" was
renamed in a dedication ceremony hosted by officials of the City of Orange
Beach and the Alabama State Division of Parks to officially open the Backcountry
Trail. To everyone's surprise,
especially Mr. Branyon's, the trail was renamed the "Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail".
Hugh Branyon has been the Gulf State Park Superintendent for over 30 years,
beginning in 1976. He has been with the Department of Conservation and
Natural Resources Division of State Parks for more than 40 years, and is
currently the Southwest District Superintendent over six state parks. Mr.
Branyon is married to the former Carol Wenzel of Bon Secour, AL. They have
two daughters and five grandchildren.
It was apparent from the people who spoke about Mr. Branyon that he is strongly
admired for his dedication, vision, and love of the natural beauty, that is the Gulf State Park.
What was also clear is that Mr. Branyon is admired for his good heartedness and his lack of
ego! This says a lot for a man in his position.
